چکیده
Apical periodontitis is an inflammatory lesion in the periodontal tissues that is caused mostly by bacterial elements derived from the infected root canal system of teeth (Core concept 7.1). In non-treated teeth apical periodontitis represents a defensive response to a primary infection in a necrotic pulp. Apical periodontitis may also develop due to a secondary infection subsequent to endodontic treatment procedures. Post-treatment apical periodontitis is most commonly due to either unsuccessful control of primary root canal infection by endodontic treatment measures, or infection or reinfection of the root canal system due to inadequate obturation and/or inadequate coronal seal that allowed bacterial leakage to take place. Inadvertent extrusion of certain medicaments and root filling materials into the periapical tissue compartment may also cause tissue toxic effects as well as precipitate foreign body reactions (Chapter 12). In this chapter the focus will be on apical periodontitis associated with non-endodontically treated teeth affected by root canal infection. It will be described in terms of biological function, pathogenesis and clinical as well as histological presentation. The nature of apical periodontitis

Periapical Status and Quality of Root Canal Fillings in a Moroccan Subpopulation
AIM The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP) and quality of root canal fillings in an adult Moroccan subpopulation. METHODS In the study 508 patients were included, attending the Conservative Dentistry Clinic at the Faculty of Dentistry of Casablanca. 508 panoramic and 709 periapical radiographs were observed. The periapical status of all teeth (with the ...
متن کاملOn the causes of persistent apical periodontitis: a review.
Apical periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of periradicular tissues caused by aetiological agents of endodontic origin. Persistent apical periodontitis occurs when root canal treatment of apical periodontitis has not adequately eliminated intraradicular infection. Problems that lead to persistent apical periodontitis include: inadequate aseptic control, poor access cavity design, m...

Purpose of Review This review describes the recent findings from epidemiological studies on endodontic infections. The recent literature was screened for studies on the prevalence of primary apical periodontitis and posttreatment apical periodontitis in various populations. Recent Findings Twenty-nine articles reporting data on the prevalence of primary or posttreatment apical periodontitis f...
متن کاملInfluence of the Quality of Root Canal Treatment and Crown Restoration on the Prevalence of Apical Periodontitis
Introdouction: The high prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP) of endodontic origin raises an important public health problem. Root canal treatment (RCT) and crown restoration (CR) have an effect on its prevalence. This cross-sectional study was performed to assess the effect of RCT and CR on the prevalence of AP. Materials and methods: Two observers assessed 608 teeth with RCT belonging to p...

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Treponema denticola in symptomatic apical periodontitis and in symptomatic apical abscesses by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. METHODS Microbial samples were collected from 60 single-rooted teeth having carious lesions and necrotic pulps. For each tooth, clinical data including patient symptoms were recorded...
